The diner buzzes with a comfortable, authentic vibe, not overly polished but thoroughly welcoming, making it a perfect spot for families, solo diners, and groups of friends alike.
The menu is a treasure trove of diner classics elevated with fresh ingredients and bold flavors. Equally tempting are the fluffy pancakes and French toast—each served with butter and syrup, evoking that comforting diner indulgence.

The Chicken Croquettes and Chicken Pot Pie are soulful choices that carry a comforting homemade touch, while the iconic Philly Cheesesteak Fries deliver a satisfying crunch topped with melty cheese and tender beef—an irresistible nod to Philadelphia's culinary heritage.
For those with a sweet tooth, Penrose Diner’s bakery shines with standout desserts such as the exquisite Strawberry Cheesecake, delicate Cannoli, and rich Rice Pudding. One guest, Brandy W., mentioned grabbing a to-go slice of strawberry cheesecake that was “fresh, taste on point,” and highly recommendable—a sentiment echoed by many happy patrons.
Families will appreciate the thoughtful kids’ menu offering classic favorites like scrambled eggs with homefries, cheeseburger sliders, chicken fingers with fries, and pancakes—all affordably priced and sure to please the little ones.
Penrose Diner’s friendly, authentic vibe is what truly seals the experience. Randy Rossi captured this perfectly, describing the staff as “Philly friendly” — a refreshing, genuine friendliness that mirrors the city’s character without pretense. The fast, accurate service complements a menu that feels both familiar and thoughtfully crafted, making every visit memorable.
Whether you’re starting your day with their famous Breakfast Skillet or winding down over a comforting Chicken Francaise or Chicken Parm as Stephanie Bozella did, Penrose Diner promises a reliable, hearty, and flavorful dining experience that invites you back time and again.
All in all, Penrose Diner is more than just a place to eat — it’s a welcoming corner of Philadelphia where the food tastes like home, the staff know how to make you feel comfortable, and every dish tells a story of authentic diner tradition served with a South Philly heart.
I loved everything about this place. First time, had breakfast food mostly and all I can say is the food was fresh, taste on point and eve got a to-go strawberry cheesecake slice ...highly recommend. Would I recommend
Our buddy from Philly told us we had to go here while we were in the city, and it did not disappoint. Nice people, the bakery was insane, food was so freakin good and the service was great!
My first visit to Penrose Diner was incredible!! Chris is a personable, friendly and kind waiter. We thoroughly enjoyed the French onion soup, chicken parm and chicken francaise. Coming back for breakfast next! :)
Classic South Philly environment. Staff is friendly but not corny friendly, they are Philly friendly. If ya dont know difference you will after you visit here. The service was fast and my order was perfect. 4 eggs over medium (white was cooked and yolk was dunkable), hash browns with onions, toasted English Muffin, and sweet Italian sausage. The Coffee was diner good. The interior was clean as well as the men's restroom. If you are expecting a gourmet dinning experience you are going to the wrong place. What you can expect is a good meal, decent portions, and its served fast and fresh.
A Decent Diner Detour—but Nothing to Write Home About Tucked along a fairly accessible stretch of town, this classic diner is easy enough to find, with its glowing signage and welcoming exterior. While the parking lot offers ample spots, maneuvering into them requires a bit of patience—tight spaces make it a snug fit during busy hours. Upon entry, we were seated right away, which was a pleasant start. The atmosphere was typical of your neighborhood diner: cozy booths, bustling kitchen sounds, and the familiar hum of casual conversation. Service, however, was lukewarm at best. Our server, though polite, seemed to be going through the motions. It took a noticeable while for her to reach our table, and when she did, her demeanor was indifferent—not rude, but not exactly warm either. I opted for the veggie omelet, which came with a trio of eggs cooked to your liking, sautéed onions, spinach, bell peppers, and a side of hash browns. The presentation was clean and the portion generous, but the flavors were muted. It was the kind of breakfast that fills you up but doesn’t leave a lasting impression—functional, not flavorful. Hoping to end on a sweeter note, I ordered the Snickers cheesecake—a dessert that promised decadence but delivered mediocrity. The texture leaned more toward dense than creamy, and the flavor profile lacked the rich, nutty punch one would expect from a dessert inspired by such a bold candy bar. For the price, it felt more like a missed opportunity than a satisfying finale. In sum, this diner offers a convenient pit stop with standard fare and service that won’t offend—but also won’t dazzle. If you’re nearby and need a quick bite, it does the job. Just don’t expect to be swept off your feet.
Penrose never disappoints. Their mac & crab is absolutely delicious—a perfect blend of creamy cheesiness, the natural sweetness of crabmeat, and the subtle tang from stewed tomatoes. A truly satisfying dish!
